Our Grow Local Cook Local program is a partnership with Melbourne Farmers Markets, to demonstrate how to cook delicious food using produce that is easily grown at home. The program has something for everyone of all ages and abilities. It encourages our community to think about food steps instead of food miles and to connect with the land and the seasons. It helps children recognise where food comes from, encourages small scale urban agriculture and promotes sustainable living.

The program includes talks by urban agriculture specialists, cooking workshops run from the Alphington Community Farmgate kitchen and preserving workshops run from Alphington Community Centre. The program is supported by a sustainability grant from the City of Yarra.

winter workshops

Our workshops were held June and July at the Alphington Community Farmgate kitchen to explore honey, microgreens and sprouts, mushrooms, winter herbs and winter leafy greens. The workshops details:

  • Honey Honey - Monday 28 June 2021, 10-11.30am

  • Teeny Gardens for Tiny Homes (micro greens and sprouts) - Tuesday 6 July 2021, 10-11.30am

  • Marvellous Mushrooms - Wednesday 7 July 2021, 10-11.30am

  • Chive Talking (winter herbs) - Thursday 8 July 2021, 10-11.30am

  • Green Snacks (winter greens) - Wednesday 14 July 2021, 4-5.30pm

Preserves sessions

We’re running a series of more casual preserving sessions at Alphington Community Centre. Local fruit, veggies and herbs are turned in to jams, jellies, pickles and vinegars.
